Typing Test
How the test works
Pick a length, click the text and start typing. The timer starts on your first keystroke, not before.
- One, five or ten minutes, or a custom time of one minute or more.
- Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters (5 characters = 1 word).
- Accuracy counts every keystroke, including the ones you corrected.
- A finger heatmap shows where your mistakes come from.
The Typing Test measures your speed on text you have not seen. To train rather than measure, use Practice. New to touch typing? The 30-day course starts with Day 1.
Questions people ask
How is words per minute calculated?
Five characters count as one word, spaces included. Net WPM, the figure we show, subtracts your mistakes, so it describes work you would not have to go back and fix.
How long should a typing test be?
One minute is enough for a rough idea. Five or ten minutes is a truer measure, because short tests flatter you and stamina is part of real typing.
Is 40 WPM a good result?
It is about the adult average and enough for most office and study work, provided accuracy is around 95 per cent or better.
Do I need an account to take the typing test?
No. The test is free, needs no sign-up, and your result stays in your browser unless you choose to create an account.
Why is my accuracy lower than I expected?
Every keystroke counts, including the ones you corrected. That is deliberate: corrections take time in real work too.
